SCHOOL DISTRICT ACCOUNTABILITY ACT

MEETING THE MANDATORY BOARD MEMBER TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

On March 15, 2007, Gov. Jon S. Corzine signed into law the School District Accountability Act. This multi-faceted legislation impacts school boards in a variety of ways and one key area is boardmember training. Besides taking training in their first year, board members now need to attend additional training in subsequent years, as described below. This is the first year the requirement is in effect and NJSBA has obtained the approval of the New Jersey Department of Education to offer a single course, focused on the state’s new monitoring system—the New Jersey Quality Single Accountability Continuum (NJQSAC)—to all affected board members.

Board members MUST attend a required training program if they fall into one of the following categories:

  • 1st Term Board Members in their 2nd and 3rd years

  • Reelected/Reappointed Board Members

NJSBA is offering numerous evening training opportunities at the following locations:

  • September 19, 2007, Bergen County Community College, Paramus

  • November 29, 2007, Morris County Firefighters and Police Training Academy, Parsippany

  • December 6, 2007, Clifton High School, Clifton

  • March 4, 2008, Hudson County Community College, Jersey City

  • March 5, 2008, Warren County Technical School, Washington

Each program begins with registration and local county school boards association updates from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. The mandatory training runs from 7:30 to 9 p.m.

The cost for this mandatory training is $32 per person. To register or for more information, contact NJSBA’s Business Department at (888) 886-5722, ext. 5217.

In addition to the regional opportunities to meet this training requirement, board members will have opportunities at Workshop (as part of the Workshop registration fee) and through webinars and computer based training (details to be announced in the fall).
