NJSBA on Tenure Bill: Far-Reaching Reform Still Needed
- The tenure legislation approved Monday by the Assembly does not encompass the meaningful reforms desired by the NJSBA and needed in our schools, the Association's executive director said.

Bill Would Change School Ethics Oversight
- NJSBA is seeking amendments to legislation that would place the enforcement of ethical standards of school officials with the New Jersey State Ethics Commission, and thereby eliminate the New Jersey School Ethics Commission.

Sunshine Law, Open Public Records Act Bills Advance
- Making board committees subject to the Sunshine Law, requiring meetings to be recorded, and a ban on board members' texting during a meeting are some of the provisions of two bills that would change the Open Public Meetings Act and Open Public Records Act.

State Budget Bill Advances
- Voting along party lines, the Senate and Assembly on Monday passed a bill that would appropriate $31.74 billion for the state budget for fiscal 2013. The budget bill does not change the dollar amounts or allocations of state aid for education recommended by the governor in February.

Student Health Survey Shows Positive Trends
- The state's Student Health Survey, which tracks trends in student health and well-being, shows positive trends in areas ranging from violence to drug use. The survey also includes recent trends, such as on texting while driving, bullying and prescription drugs use.

Policy Update: E-Rate and Internet Safety
- NJSBA has updated its Internet Safety and Technology model policy, as districts participating in the federal E-Rate program and receiving federal funds for technology are required to meet additional policy standards to comply with the federal Children's Internet Protection Act.

NJSBA Offers Communications Clearinghouse
- NJSBA is offering a new service to school officials: A "Communications Clearinghouse" with sample letters and notices to parents that school boards can use when faced with a crisis or tragedy. NJSBA's clearinghouse includes samples on issues such as bomb threats, death of a student, and mold in schools.

- As the ailing economy brings more students to school without lunch money, many districts struggle with unpaid lunch debt. NJSBA is extending its 30-Second Survey that asks readers what their district's experience has been — and how they try to get families to repay those debts.
