On July 12, New Jersey Acting Governor Kim Guadagno signed S-618, legislation which requires school bus drivers to use flashing red lights when picking up or discharging adult passengers with disabilities. The law also requires drivers of vehicles approaching or overtaking a school bus to stop at least 25 feet from a bus that has activated its flashing lights. The law provides adult students with disabilities with the same protections currently in place for child passengers. S-618 also establishes penalties for violators which are consistent with the protections currently in place for child passengers on a school bus. NJSBA supported the legislation.
