This school year, approximately 200 New Jersey school boards will return to the bargaining table with their local teachers' union. In the current atmosphere of unprecedented public interest, coupled with tight financial constraints, boards must be well prepared to face the challenge.
To help boards prepare for the coming round of labor negotiations, NJSBA is offering a series of training programs.
Preparing for Bargaining on Saturday, Sept. 8 will help board members understand the role of the bargaining team; learn how to cost out the contract; develop the skills to create board proposals; and understand the legal requirements that govern the negotiations process – including the impact of the statutorily required health insurance contributions.
Preparing for Bargaining offers 2 Board Member Academy Credits. Application for 6.4 Continuing Legal Education Credits for New Jersey lawyers is pending by the New Jersey Supreme Court.
Intermediate Bargaining on Saturday, Sept. 22 will address the use of data in negotiations; what is being sought in the union's proposals; how to prepare counter proposals and tradeoffs; effective communications; and impasse procedures, including the possible effects stemming from changes to the interest arbitration system.
Intermediate Bargaining offers 2 Board Member Academy Credits. Application for 6.7 Continuing Legal Education Credits for New Jersey lawyers is pending.
Registration Both programs will be held at the New Jersey Principals & Supervisors Association headquarters in Monroe Township. Registration for both programs may be done online, but only by the school business administrator. Business administrators wishing to register officials from their districts should have a scanned purchase order ready to attach to the registration.
Additional Resources In addition, the Labor Relations web page provides information on current topics, including recent changes to the health benefits law and major case law development. It also contains current negotiations data and links to two subscriber services, the Index and Analyses of PERC Decisions and The Negotiations Advisor Online.
