M E D I A A D V I S O R Y EVENT: COLLABORATING ON REAL SOLUTIONS TO THE 2% CAP DATE/TIME: Saturday, January 29, 2011, 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. LOCATION: War Memorial Auditorium, Trenton SPONSORS: New Jersey School Boards Association CONTACT: Frank Belluscio, NJSBA, 609-278-5202 The state-level organizations representing school districts and municipalities will sponsor an all-day event on Saturday, Jan. 29, designed to help local officials control costs and direct limited revenue to critical operations. Called “Collaborating on Real Solutions to the 2% Cap,” the program will offer sessions on shared services, controlling labor costs and successful partnerships among school districts and municipalities. A statutory 2-percent limit on increases in school district, municipal and county property tax levies goes into effect this year. The Jan. 29 program will provide participants with information and resources on methods to work within the cap while preserving the quality of essential services. Dr. James W. Hughes, dean of the Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University, will deliver the keynote address. Afterward, local officials will participate in seven sessions on topics, such as “School Budget 101,” “Leveraging Economies of Scale and Shared Services for Information Technology,” and “The State of the Unions: Labor Relations.” Innovative school-municipal partnerships in Woodbridge Township and Lyndhurst will also be highlighted in separate sessions. More than 200 local school and municipal officials are expected to attend the event. “Collaborating on Real Solutions to the 2% Cap” will take place on Saturday, Jan. 29, starting at 9 a.m. (registration, 8:30 a.m.) at the War Memorial Auditorium in Trenton. The New Jersey School Boards Association is a federation of 588 local boards of education and includes 44 charter school associate members. NJSBA advocates the interests of school districts, trains local school board members, and provides resources for the advancement of public education. The New Jersey State League of Municipalities helps communities do a better job of self-government through pooling information resources and brain power. It is authorized by State Statute and since 1915 has been serving local officials throughout the Garden State. All 566 municipalities are members of the League. ###
