Proposed national standards and a discussion about the lame-duck legislative session will be part of the New Jersey School Boards Association’s Delegate Assembly, which will convene at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 21 at the Wyndham Conference Center in Plainsboro. The Delegate Assembly is NJSBA’s policy-setting body. The agenda will include –

  • A resolution that would give NJSBA to authority to address the recently proposed “National Common Core Standards.” The national standards, developed by the National Governor’s Association and the Council of Chief State School Administrators, would set benchmarks for states to adopt specific local curriculum requirements. In September, the New Jersey Department of Education requested comments from all education stakeholders on the first draft of the standards. The policy approved by school board members will guide NJSBA staff as it advocates for school boards in Trenton, Washington, D.C., and the courts.

  • The discussion panel – “Looking to the Lame Duck Session and Beyond” – will follow the Delegate Assembly, starting approximately 10 a.m. Featured are Assemblyman Joseph Cryan chairman of the Assembly Education Committee, and Michael Vrancik, NJSBA’s director of Governmental Relations.

Reporters should contact Frank Belluscio or Mike Yaple at (609) 278-5202 for additional information.

NJSBA members should contact the Association’s Call Center by e-mail at callcenter@njsba.org for registration information.
