Alert: Slow Down the Cap Bill

We don’t need another S-1701.

But that could happen if the Legislature does not put the brakes on the 4-percent property tax cap bill. Today, we are asking NJSBA members to contact their state Senators and Senate President Richard Codey with a simple request:

Conduct at least one public hearing on the 4-percent property tax cap bill (A-1).

This lengthy, complex legislation was introduced late Friday afternoon, Jan. 26. It was pushed through the Assembly on Monday, Jan. 29. It could come up for a vote in the Senate on Monday, Feb. 5.

  • A hearing would allow analysis, comment and review. It would help ensure that the bill provides reasonable control over property growth without hurting public education.

  • Unintended consequences result when speed overtakes thoughtful review. That’s what happened with S-1701.

  • Without adequate review, we could have a law that hurts public education and property taxpayers.
