Voters Approve $73 Million in School Construction Proposals on April 15 TRENTON, April 16, 2008 — Voters approved 12 of the 15 referendums on Tuesday’s ballot, for a total of $73.75 million in school construction, the New Jersey School Boards Association reported today. Of the total amount of construction approved on the April 15 ballot, $31.8 million will be reimbursed by the state through annual payments of aid for debt service. The Annual School Election on April 15 was the date when voters in 90 percent of New Jersey school districts elected school board members and voted on their district’s annual operating budget. The Annual School Election is also one of five specific dates a year on which a school board can propose a referendum question for construction projects. The remaining dates on which school boards can schedule bond elections this year are Sept. 30 and Dec. 9. Construction proposals that involve “green energy” continue to be popular, as districts obtain grants and other incentives from state agencies. Three of this month’s 15 proposals and three of last month’s eight proposals included solar projects. Results of the April 15 construction proposals follow. Information was derived from ballot questions supplied by the state’s county boards of elections.
