Voters to Decide $241 Million in School Construction Tuesday

TRENTON, December 3, 2008—Voters in 20 school districts will decide more than $241 million in school construction on Tuesday, the New Jersey School Boards Association reported today.

Of the total amount requested, state school-construction aid would cover $65 million. In addition, several proposals include installing solar panels, and those projects are eligible for at least $2.3 million in state grants to promote clean energy.

December 9 is the final date that a school board can hold a referendum in 2008. So far, voters approved 38 percent of the $417.7 million requested in the 30 previous school-construction proposals this year – the lowest approval rate for proposed construction spending since NJSBA began tracking school referendums a dozen years ago.

There are five specific dates a year on which a board of education may schedule a school election. The next date on which a school board may schedule a bond referendum question is Jan. 22, 2009.

A list of Tuesday’s school construction proposals is below.
