Briefings Set for School Board Candidates

TRENTON, February 26, 2008 — New Jersey’s county school boards associations will sponsor three briefing sessions for local school board candidates in March. Coordinated by the New Jersey School Boards Association, the regional programs will provide candidates with an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of local boards of education.

Candidates will receive information on what to expect if they are elected to office during the Annual School Election on April 15. The briefings will cover issues such as school policy, administration, finance and budgeting, collective bargaining, community relations, and relations among the board, superintendent and staff.

“Serving on a local board of education can be a rewarding but challenging experience,” said Kevin E. Ciak, NJSBA president. “These evening programs, conducted by our expert member services staff, provide candidates with a better understanding of what will be expected of them as school board members.”

There is no charge for attendance. Dates and locations of the briefings are as follows:  

Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cape May, Cumberland, Gloucester, Salem

Hunterdon, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Ocean, Somerset, Union
Wednesday, March 19, 7 p.m.
North Brunswick High School, Raider Road (off U.S. 130), North Brunswick

Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex, Warren
Wednesday, March 12, 7 p.m.
Montville Township High School, 100 Horseneck Road, Montville
