November 25, 2008

Dear Fellow School Board Member,

When I was elected NJSBA’s president in May, one of the first goals that I set was to increase participation in our Delegate Assembly. This past Saturday, I was delighted when the Delegate Assembly attracted the best turnout this Association has seen in 14 years.

I want to thank the Ad Hoc Committee on the Delegate Assembly, which provided the strategy to transform the Delegate Assembly into a forum for dialogue and learning. Their vision led to Saturday’s program, which provided mandatory training as well as an engaging panel discussion on school district regionalization.

I also want to thank Michael Aron, senior political correspondent for NJN, for moderating the panel, as well as the honored guests: Dr. Gerald Vernotica, the assistant education commissioner who will spearhead the state’s regionalization effort; Assemblyman Scott Rumana of the Assembly Education Committee; Vito A. Gagliardi Jr., a school board attorney who has represented various districts in regionalization disputes; and Michael Vrancik, NJSBA’s director of Governmental Relations.

But most of all, I want to thank the school board members who committed a Saturday to do the business of the Association and to attend this timely program. Meeting our attendance goal for the November Delegate Assembly required us to overcome challenges. In the end we were successful, thanks in large part to the dedication of the local school board members who are committed to making a difference in their communities.

Sincerely,

Harry J. Delgado
President
