Voters Approve $53.6 million in School Construction

TRENTON, Sept. 28, 2011—Voters in two of the five New Jersey school districts holding bond referendums on Tuesday approved more than $53.6 million in school construction, according to the New Jersey School Boards Association.

Of the total amount that was approved, $14.9 million qualifies for state funds.

School boards may hold special elections on five specific dates during the year. The final date that a school board may schedule a bond referendum this year is Dec. 13.

Results of the Sept. 27 school construction proposals are below.

STATEWIDE

Total amount approved – $53,663,700 ($71,214,333 requested)

Amount eligible for state reimbursement – $14,907,642

BERGEN COUNTY

Park Ridge – Rejected

Transfer unexpended funds from a 2009 construction project to install artificial turf and lights on the football field, and to resurface the track.

Total amount – $1,400,000

GLOUCESTER COUNTY

Kingsway Regional – Approved

Construct an addition and renovations to the high school and middle school.

Total amount – $31,122,450

Amount eligible for state reimbursement – $8,463,401

East Greenwich Township – Proposal 1 Approved; Proposal 2 Rejected

Proposal 1: Construct additions (classroom and cafeteria) and renovations (fire systems, toilets, HVAC, electrical, windows/doors) to two elementary schools, and acquire 1.25 acres of land.

Total amount – $22,541,250

Amount eligible for state reimbursement – $6,444,241

Proposal 2 (contingent upon approval of Proposal 1): Construct additions (offices, gym) and renovations (offices, entrance canopies) to two elementary schools.

Total amount – $2,854,376

Amount eligible for state reimbursement – $574,672

MONMOUTH COUNTY

Monmouth Regional – Rejected

Install solar panels and undertake other renovations (classrooms, gym, asbestos removal, masonry) to high school. The ballot says the school board did not seek state aid for renovations because state is currently not approving aid for capital projects.

Total amount – $12,306,257

MORRIS COUNTY

Montville Township – Rejected

Approve a transfer from the general operating budget to the capital reserve account to pay for the installation of a turf field at the high school.

Total amount – $990,000
