Voters to Decide $71 million in School Construction on Tuesday

TRENTON, Sept. 23, 2011—Voters in five New Jersey school districts will act on $71.2 million in proposed school construction on Tuesday, Sept. 27, the New Jersey School Boards Association reported today.

Of the total amount that is being requested, more than $15.4 million would qualify for state funds. Two of the five proposals seek voter approval not to borrow additional funds, but to transfer existing funds for a new project.

The last Tuesday in September is one of the five dates each year that school boards may hold special elections. The next date on which a school board may schedule a bond referendum question is Dec. 13.

Details of the Sept. 27 school construction proposals are below.

New Jersey School Construction Referendums

Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011

STATEWIDE

Total amount requested – $71,214,333

Amount eligible for state reimbursement – $15,482,314

BERGEN COUNTY

Park Ridge

Transfer unexpended funds from a 2009 construction project to install artificial turf and lights on the football field, and to resurface the track.

Total amount – $1,400,000

GLOUCESTER COUNTY

Kingsway Regional

Construct an addition and renovations to the high school and middle school.

Total amount – $31,122,450

Amount eligible for state reimbursement – $8,463,401

East Greenwich Township

Proposal 1: Construct additions (classroom and cafeteria) and renovations (fire systems, toilets, HVAC, electrical, windows/doors) to two elementary schools, and acquire 1.25 acres of land.

Total amount – $22,541,250

Amount eligible for state reimbursement – $6,444,241

Proposal 2 (contingent upon approval of Proposal 1): Construct additions (offices, gym) and renovations (offices, entrance canopies) to two elementary schools.

Total amount – $2,854,376

Amount eligible for state reimbursement – $574,672

MONMOUTH COUNTY

Monmouth Regional

Install solar panels and undertake other renovations (classrooms, gym, asbestos removal, masonry) to high school. The ballot says the school board did not seek state aid for renovations because state is currently not approving aid for capital projects.

Total amount – $12,306,257

MORRIS COUNTY

Montville Township

Approve a transfer from the general operating budget to the capital reserve account to pay for the installation of a turf field at the high school.

Total amount – $990,000
