Deadline Approaches for School Board Candidates

TRENTON, February 17, 2010—With the deadline for filing for school board candidacy quickly approaching, the president of the New Jersey School Boards Association today urged citizens sincerely interested in education to consider running for their local board of education.

The deadline for filing the nominating petition — the document that places a citizen’s name on the ballot — is 4 p.m. Monday, March 1. The Annual School Election is slated for April 20.

“School board membership is a challenging and rewarding form of public service,” said Harry J. Delgado, NJSBA president.

To help guide citizens through the candidacy process, NSJBA has developed a “School Board Candidate Kit.” The kit features frequently asked questions about serving on a school board, ethics information, a calendar of important dates in the school-election process, and a sample nominating petition. The Candidate Kits can be found on NJSBA’s Web site at www.njsba.org/candidacy.

“I encourage citizens who sincerely care about children, education and their community to consider school board candidacy,” said Delgado. “When it comes to service in the community, serving on a school board is one way to make a profound impact.”
