NJSBA 'Webcast' Focuses on 2009 School Budget Changes

TRENTON, April 16, 2009—To inform citizens and local school officials about the 2009 school budget and election process, the New Jersey School Boards Association has produced a Web-based program, School Funding: The New Rules of the Game.

The 40-minute “Webcast” addresses the impact of recent state law and regulations, including the 4% tax levy cap, the efficiency standards and the School Funding Reform Act. Other topics include school board communication with the public about proposed budgets and municipal review of defeated budgets.

Speakers include Neil K. Cramer, Sussex County executive school business administrator and state coordinator of the executive county school business administrators; Louis J. Pepe, business administrator for the Summit Public Schools; and Michael F. Kaelber, NJSBA director of legal and policy services.

This year’s Annual School Election will take place on Tuesday, April 21. Voters in more than 90 percent of New Jersey’s communities will act on proposed school budgets and select men and women to represent them on their local boards of education. Statewide, an estimated $14 billion in local school tax levies will be on the ballot, along with 1,627 board of education positions.
