Voters to Decide $237 million in School Construction Tuesday

TRENTON, December 4, 2009—Voters in 15 New Jersey school districts decide whether to approve more than $237 million in school construction on Tuesday, the New Jersey School Boards Association reported today.

Energy-saving initiatives continue to be popular, as seven of the 15 bond referendums on Tuesday’s ballot ask voters to approve solar panels.

Of the total $237 million that is being requested, nearly $76.7 million would qualify for state aid, either through school construction grants paid up-front, annual “debt service aid” payments to school districts, or rebates through the state’s Clean Energy program.

School boards may hold special elections on five specific dates a year. The next date on which a school board may schedule a bond referendum question is Jan. 26.
