Competition Held to Honor School Programs on African-American History

The New Jersey Amistad Commission has created an award program that will identify and catalog up to 10 outstanding practices in schools that incorporate African-American history into the school’s curriculum. The purpose of the Amistad Exemplary Practices Awards is to recognize the excellence of these programs in the state’s public schools and to make the information available to educators throughout New Jersey.

Any New Jersey teacher, group of teachers, or school that serves students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12 is eligible to participate. The practice must have been in place for at least one year prior to submission, with only one application allowed per applicant. Commercially developed practices or those implemented around black history month will not be considered.

The deadline for application submission is April 21. The selected programs will each receive a grant award of $5,000. For further information, contact Anthony Bland at 609-984-6755.
