Networking Opportunities at Workshop
While Workshop 2005 offers an outstanding array of learning opportunities, it also gives you more chances to network with colleagues from around the state. If you have attended any of NJSBA’s interactive training programs, you know what a valuable resource other board members and administrators can be.
The atmosphere at Workshop makes it easy to network. When you attend an action lab, you will be seated at a round table with five other people. Choose a table with people you don’t know. As you work through the hands-on activities, share not only your perspective, but also your name, board and e-mail address with your action lab partners.
In the large group sessions, the Critical Issue Session, the State Board of Education Program and the State Legislative Update, turn to the people seated near you and introduce yourself. These board members are attending those sessions because their interests are similar to yours. There are also opportunities for members of urban and vocational boards to learn together.
Let’s move down to the exhibit floor. In Aisle 200, you will find the County Association Leadership Café. Pick up your county ribbon, enjoy a complimentary cup of coffee, sample a pastry or two prepared by students, and strike up a conversation with board members from your county and around the state. Talk to your NJSBA county program coordinator and field service representative. In addition, county school boards associations hold breakfasts, luncheons and other gatherings throughout the three-day event.
Wednesday night provides you with two major events to network, including the dessert and cordial reception, and the dance party. In addition, on Wednesday and Thursday evenings, many of our vendors host receptions at the various Workshop hotels.
Make it your goal to meet at least two dozen new people over the three days of Workshop, and exchange contact information. It will enhance your Workshop experience and your experience as a board member.
