Defeated Budget Resources

For school districts that suffered budget defeats last week, a visit to a state Department of Education Web page—2006-07 Budget Statement: Defeated Budget Information—may prove helpful. The Web page includes—

  • A guide  for local school districts to follow through the municipal review process

  • A presentation on the defeated budget process

  • A shared-services fact sheet

  • And a new entry for 2006—a checklist  of documents and processes followed by the Department of Education in considering applications for restoration and cases of failure to certify or agree to a school tax levy.

NJSBA Advice Before visiting the SDOE Defeated Budget Web page, stop at NJSBA’s Budget Watch online where you can view a presentation on How to Handle Defeated a Defeated School Budget: School Boards’ Perspective 2006.  NJSBA presented the information to municipal officials during a New Jersey State League of Municipalities seminar, How to Handle a Defeated School Budget, on Monday.

Also read NJSBA's Budget Review and Restoration of Reductions Memo 2006-2007 for important information.
