Urge Support for NCLB Improvement Act

NJSBA urges its members to reach out to their Congressmen and ask them to co-sponsor the No Child Left Behind Improvements Act of 2006 (H.R. 5709), proposed by Rep. Don Young of Alaska.

H.R. 5709 is consistent with National School Boards Association proposed legislation. The bill includes more than 40 provisions covering five areas including assessments, Adequate Yearly Progress, sanctions, state flexibility and non-public schools.

“I firmly believe in the original goals of NCLB, but I understand that a ‘one size fits all’ approach to student achievement is not possible,” Young said when he introduced the proposal. “My bill builds on the major reforms of the No Child Left Behind Act ...and offers improvements that address many of the unintended consequences of the federal legislation while holding schools and school districts accountable.”

NJSBA will schedule meetings between members and their congressmen in August and September to urge their support for H.R. 5709 and to discuss other federal education priorities.
