Measure Would Outlaw Activity Fees

Assemblyman John Burzichelli, D-Gloucester, has proposed a measure that would prohibit school districts from charging students to participate in sports and other school activities.

The bill, A-3150, would allow school districts to charge fees for equipment or supplies only if the student or parent is reimbursed.

The issue came to a head after a Mercer County school district announced that it plans to implement an after-school activity fee of $100 for one student, $150 for two in a family, and $175 for three in a family, beginning this school year. At least seven other school districts in the state charge for extracurricular activities, in varying amounts.

The measure has been referred to the Assembly Education Committee.
