Member Identify Best Practices

During the first joint meeting of NJSBA’s County Association Leadership, Urban Boards Committee and Legislative Committee, members offered suggestions to improve outreach and to boost interest in advocacy among local school boards.

Relationships One major theme came through in the discussion led by NJSBA President Kevin E. Ciak and Executive Director Edwina M. Lee: Building relationships with lawmakers, other government officials and community groups. Technology and media relations were stressed, along with other ideas, including:

  • Communicate with municipal officials and county freeholders.

  • Distribute NJSBA action alerts to community organizations and civic groups.

  • Since legislators are not always available, regularly speak with legislative aides or assistants.

  • Forward e-mail alerts to citizens who share your perspective on issues.
  • Post comments on the Internet in community forums.

  • Submit an opinion piece to local newspapers.

  • Organize a regional roundtable to discuss how districts can share services, cut costs and increase advocacy.
These and more ideas will be posted shortly on NJSBA’s Special Session Resources page
