Budget Watch 2007:
Where School Districts Stand Today—
REVISED
Gov. Jon S. Corzine is scheduled to present his 2007-2008 state budget to the Legislature at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 22. His address will be broadcast live on New Jersey Public Television and Radio and also online at www.njleg.state.nj.us and www.njn.net.

Special Session: Post-Mortem
A-1 would establish 4 percent property tax caps on school, municipal and fire district budgets. It would also provide residents with property tax credits, funded through part of the new revenue generated by last year’s 1-cent sales tax increase.

Nearly 1,000 school board members from across the United States gathered in Washington, D.C., Jan. 28-30 for the National School Boards Association’s Federal Relations Network (FRN) Conference.

Bush Budget Comes Up Short
President Bush’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2008 would eliminate 44 programs, including Title V Innovative Education grants (currently funded at $99 million), Education Technology State Grants (currently funded at $273 million), Smaller Learning Communities (currently funded at $90.4 million), and the Even Start program (which is funded at $111.6 million).
