NJSBA Responds to Virginia
Tech Shootings—
WEB EXTRA

Kevin E. Ciak, NJSBA president, today said that the shootings at Virginia Tech this week demonstrate how fragile life can be.

“We wish the victims, their families, and the entire Virginia Tech family much healing as they grieve the loss of so many innocent people in their community,” Ciak said. “Our hearts go out to all of them during this incredibly difficult time.”

As educators, it is difficult to accept that another learning community in our nation has been struck by such horrific and reckless acts of violence, Ciak added. At least three New Jersey students were killed in the attack. And at least one other New Jerseyan was injured.

Ciak noted that New Jersey school officials should continue to be vigilant to foster safe learning environments.

“In recent years, schools throughout New Jersey have implemented sweeping measures to improve school safety,” he said. “They have created new safety plans, initiated new programs to identify and assist troubled students, and hired and trained staff to increase school security.”
