State Update
Volunteer Background Checks

S-60/A-515 permits criminal history record checks for unpaid volunteers in schools.  The new law requires reimbursement for the cost of the volunteer background checks and also permits school districts to reimburse paid staff for such costs. NJSBA supports volunteer background checks.  Its position is based on policy that encourages efforts to advance school and student safety.

Bus Driver Inspections

S-328 requires school bus drivers to conduct inspections at the end of their routes to ensure that no children remain on the vehicles.  NJSBA supported the bill.

Student Pedestrian Safety

S-1079 establishes a penalty for failing to comply with a school crossing guard’s signal to stop.

Gifted and Talented Students Month

SJR-24 /AJR-131 designates March as “Gifted and Talented Students Month” in New Jersey.  The measure is intended to raise awareness of the need to identify gifted and talented children and to match them with instruction that nurtures their abilities.
