State Board Appoints
New President, Vice President

Dr. Ronald Butcher was unanimously appointed by the State Board of Education at its July 18 meeting to serve as its president. The State Board also selected Arcelio Aponte to serve as its vice president.

Both will serve one-year terms that expire next June.

Butcher, an administrator at Rowan University, said he looks forward to working with Commissioner of Education Lucille E. Davy in implementing the new state monitoring process (NJ QSAC). “This is a very important time to be a member of the board and I look forward to working with the department on the many important issues impacting education across the state,” Butcher said in a prepared statement.

Veteran Members Butcher has served on the State Board since 1990 and as its vice president from 1999 to 2003. He earned a doctorate degree in Educational Administration and Supervision from the University of Michigan. The husband and father of three lives in Pitman, Gloucester County.

Aponte, who lives in Piscataway, Middlesex County, was appointed to the State Board in 2005. He has a master’s degree in Business Administration from Rutgers University, and he works as the Director of Operations and Management for Economic Development in Newark. He is married with two children.
