Obituary: Wesley Lance, an Author of New Jersey’s Constitution

Edwina M. Lee, executive director of the New Jersey School Boards Association, extended the organization’s condolences to the family of former New Jersey State Senate President Wesley L. Lance, who passed away Aug. 25 at the age of 98.

Lance, the father of current Senate Minority Leader Leonard Lance, served numerous local school districts in northwest New Jersey as a school board attorney during his long legal career and was a friend of NJSBA. He was a member of the state Legislature for a total of 12 years, with his tenure broken by naval service during World War II and a Superior Court judgeship in the early 1950s. Prior to entering the legal profession, Lance was a public school teacher and coach.

He was a leading figure in the development of the state’s current Constitution in 1947. In addition, Lance played a major role in a 1966 convention that resulted in a constitutional amendment, which revamped the state’s legislative district structure to comply with the U.S. Supreme Court’s “one man, one vote” ruling.

Last week, Acting Governor Richard Codey ordered flags to fly at half-staff in honor of Lance.

The Lance family requests donations may be made to the Hunterdon Medical Center Foundation, 2100 Wescott Drive, Flemington, NJ  08822.
