The New Jersey State Board of Education discussed a new long-range plan at its Sept. 20 annual retreat. The board’s current five-year plan ends in 2008. The new plan, with the theme of preparing students for college and the job market, is expected to be in place by the summer.
The board agreed on the following goals:
- Revision of the Core Curriculum Content Standards, including graduation requirements, international education, diplomas, and alignment of standards from Pre-K-Higher Education;
- Training and Leadership, including alternate route teaching, retention and recruitment, leadership, urban leadership and professional development;
- Assessment, including the Special Review Assessment, raising urban test scores, state-operated and Abbott school districts, summer learning loss, data driven instruction and the expansion of assessment.
The State Board also met Oct. 3. Commissioner Lucille Davy discussed regulations being written to implement “CORE” Act (A-4). The regulations will encourage shared services; establish user-friendly budgets; and revise the county superintendents’ titles and duties. Davy said she wanted to involve all stakeholder organizations in the development of the regulations. |
