Preview of NJSBA’s Nov. 17 Delegate Assembly

NJSBA reminds all school boards that decisions made by each Delegate Assembly are followed by action which often results in the introduction of legislation, stopping undesirable legislation, or new State Board of Education policies. The Delegate Assemblies give local school boards the opportunity for input before these far-reaching statewide policy decisions are made. Therefore, we urge boards to review the proposed resolution so that their delegates are familiar with the issue. Policies adopted by the Delegate Assemblies are codified in NJSBA’s Manual of Positions and Policies on Education.

Agenda Resolution No. 1 from the Sayreville Board of Education (Middlesex) calls upon the New Jersey School Boards Association to adopt revised policy language to the NJSBA Manual of Policies and Positions on Education, File Code 6115, stating that NJSBA believes particular exercises for commemorative holidays should be left to the discretion of local boards of education and that NJSBA believes that a free public education would not be possible without the sacrifices of our veterans and that students should be made aware of the significance of Memorial Day and Veterans Day.

Also on the agenda is Sunset Review of File Code 6000, Instruction and File Code 7000, Construction, Remodeling and Renovation, of NJSBA’s Manual of Positions and Policies on Education.

Notices/Handbook Notice was e-mailed/faxed to school business administrators and county association presidents on October 12 advising them that the resolution and background materials, and policies for sunset review were placed on the Delegate Assembly Web page. Hard copies of the Delegates’ Handbook were mailed to all delegates registered by Oct. 24. If a delegate was not registered by that date, the handbook was mailed to the school business administrator.

Registration The November Delegate Assembly will be held at the Wyndham Conference Center/Hotel (formerly the Lakeside) in Plainsboro. To register online, check the link under the “What’s New” section of NJSBA's homepage. Delegates may also register by calling Cindy Stanhope at (609) 278-5254. If the delegate or alternate is unable to attend, any member of the school board may be certified to represent the board at the meeting. To be certified, delegates must show proof on district letterhead that they have been designated to represent the board at the meeting.
