44 Districts Found ‘In Need of Improvement’

Forty-four New Jersey school districts and nine charter schools were designated as “Districts in Need of Improvement” under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, state education officials announced Oct. 18.

School districts and charter schools are evaluated each year on whether student test scores achieve the necessary proficiency levels to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).  Districts that do not make AYP for two consecutive years in all grades, in either literacy or math, are identified as being “in need of improvement.”

Twelve districts that were in need of improvement last year have achieved AYP and were removed from the list.

Additional information can be found on the New Jersey Department of Education's news release.
