New Leaders in State Senate

Sen. Stephen M. Sweeney and Sen. Thomas H. Kean Jr. were selected by the Democratic and Republican caucuses, respectively, to serve as the upper house majority and minority leaders when the new legislative session begins in January.

The Democrats also named Sen. Dick Codey of Essex County to serve another term as Senate President.

Sweeney represents the 3rd Legislative District, which includes Salem County and parts of Cumberland and Gloucester counties. He is replacing Sen. Bernard F. Kenny, who is retiring. Kean, whose district includes parts of Union, Morris, Somerset and Essex counties, is replacing Sen. Leonard Lance, who stepped down from the position.

Assembly Meanwhile, the Assembly Democratic caucus re-elected Assemblyman Joe Roberts of Camden and Gloucester counties as speaker and Assemblywoman Bonnie Watson Coleman of Mercer County as majority leader. Assemblyman Alex DeCroce, whose district includes parts of Morris and Passaic counties, will continue in his role as the Assembly Republican leader.
