Season Is Right to Review Field Trip Policy

With holiday and springtime field trips approaching, it is a good time for school boards to discuss their district’s policies on student trips.

NJSBA’s Critical Policy Reference Manual includes a basic policy and a legal reference page, and NJSBA can provide additional samples from other New Jersey school districts to use as models. These are available by contacting NJSBA policy consultant Dave Bosted at (888) 886-5722, ext. 5267.

Some key issues to discuss include whether there will be any overnight trips and the extent of district oversight; arrangements for supplemental or non-instructional trips; pre-approval of the chaperones; parental permission forms; forms to nominate a new location or activity for a field trip; and availability and use of medications in emergency situations.
