Parents Could Decide Twins’ Placement

A bill introduced in the state Legislature would allow parents, not schools, to determine whether their twin children should be placed in the same classroom.

A-1671/S-2675 would allow the parent or guardian of twins, triplets or other multiples to request that the children be placed in either the same or separate classrooms.  The principal may offer advice to the parent, but the parent’s request would need to be granted by the school, as long as it was submitted in the first two weeks of the students’ enrollment.

If the situation is disruptive to the classroom, the principal could consult with the parents and teachers and then ask the school board to make a different classroom placement for the children. The school board would make the final decision regarding classroom placement.

The Assembly Education Committee released the bill on Feb. 28, and it is poised for a vote by the full Assembly. The committee added an amendment that would make the parents responsible for any additional transportation costs incurred as a result of their desired placement.
