Salem Vo-Tech Earns National Honors

Salem County Vocational Technical Schools received first place honors in the American School Board Journal’s 14th annual Magna Awards program.

The district was honored in the under 5,000 enrollment category for the Salem County Arts, Science and Technology Academies. The district started the academies to address the needs of students who wanted to enter into an academically rigorous high school program but could not do so because of financial reasons. Several of the 11 academies—including biological and medical sciences, communications, and culinary arts—offer free college credits through articulation agreements with local colleges.

The Magna Awards recognize school districts across the country for programs that advance student learning and encourage community involvement. This year’s three grand prize, 15 first place, and 15 honorable mention awards were allocated according to three enrollment categories: less than 5,000 students, 5,000 to 20,000, and 20,000 and above. California’s Santa Ynez Valley Union High School and Georgia’s Clarke County and Cherokee County school districts earned top honors in this year’s contest.
