New Law Has Chilling Effect on Second Ballot Questions
The new law that requires an unprecedented 60-percent supermajority of voters to approve additional school-funding questions, or “second ballot questions,” appears to be having a chilling effect on the number of such questions put before voters in this year’s Annual School Election. |

Senate Passes Paid Family Leave Bill
By a 21-15 vote, the state Senate on Monday passed the Paid Family Leave Bill, which would allow employees to apply for leave to care for a sick relative, a newborn or a newly adopted child. The bill would grant workers up to two thirds of their pay, to a maximum of $525 a week, for up to six weeks. |

N.J. Students Top Nation in Writing
Following last week’s report that New Jersey eighth-graders lead the nation in writing skills, NJSBA President Kevin E. Ciak stressed the need for local school boards to continue focusing on student achievement and for the state to maintain a strong financial commitment to public education. |

Delegate Assembly Handbook to be Mailed
The NJSBA Delegate Assembly Handbook, consisting of all resolutions and other materials relevant to the meeting, will be mailed to the delegate, alternate or other board member whom districts have preregistered prior to April 24 to represent the board as delegate to the May 17 meeting. |
