In accordance with Article VII, Sections 5 & 6 of the Bylaws of the New Jersey School Boards Association, adopted by the Delegate Assembly on November 18, 2006, a proposed slate of officers selected by the Nominating Committee, as well as candidates nominated by petition, will be presented to the delegates for their vote at the annual meeting on May 17, 2008.
According to guidelines set by the Board of Directors in September 1979, candidates for NJSBA officer positions, selected by the Nominating Committee or nominated by petition, are to receive publicity in this special section of School Board Notes.
The Nominating Committee has selected the following school board members for election by the delegates to serve as NJSBA officers during 2008-2010: President—Harry J. Delgado, South Brunswick, Middlesex; Vice President for County Activities—Peter J. Calvo, Glassboro, Gloucester; Vice President for Finance—John Bulina, Tabernacle Township, Burlington; Vice President for Legislation/Resolutions—Eva M. Nagy, Franklin Township, Somerset.
NJSBA Bylaws also provide a process for candidates to be nominated by petition. No candidates had submitted petitions by the March 31, 2008 deadline.
Nominations from the floor are also accepted at the Annual Meeting (Bylaws Article VII, Section 7).
Harry J. Delgado, President
I am honored to be nominated by the Nominating Committee for President. As VP for County Activities since 2004, I have traveled throughout New Jersey to engage members in issues, such as S-1701 and property tax reform. Through the Federal Relations Network, I met with members of Congress to advocate special education funding and improvements to No Child Left Behind. I initiated joint meetings between the County Association Leadership and the Legislative Committee. I encouraged the sharing of best practices among county associations and cross-county meetings to maximize training opportunities.
As President, I would promote my vision for change through participation and inclusion. With expanded mandatory training, we can now reach two-thirds of our members one to one, creating a broader base of involved members. I would like to empower this broader base of support by reinventing our present committee structure for the 21st century through increased use of technology in conducting meetings and in gathering data.
State and federal legislation, enrollment shifts, rising costs and dwindling resources create a call-to-action for NJSBA to speak with one voice in support of school boards and the children they serve.
