The Senate Education Committee released a bill on Monday that would create a state task force to research whether elementary schools should be required to provide recess.
The bill, S-226, says the 13-member panel would examine the “physical, social, emotional and intellectual benefits achieved by young students as a result of participation in school recess.” The panel would include representatives appointed by the governor, legislative leaders and education commissioner, as well as representatives from statewide education organizations, including NJSBA. The panel would have nine months to issue recommendations after it organizes. The Assembly version of the bill is A-467.
The bill is sponsored by Senators Robert W. Singer and Kevin J. O’Toole.
Currently, New Jersey requires 150 minutes of health, safety and physical education each week. The bill now goes to the full Senate. |
