NJSBA Looks for New Ways to Go Green

An NJSBA staff advisory task force will be created to make recommendations to the Executive Director on ways that the Association can become greener—anything from boosting recycling to cutting energy usage and costs.

“We’re going to be looking for ways that the Association can generally conserve resources that will save money and make the Association a more environmentally responsible organization,” said Andrei Shidlowski, NJSBA network administrator, who is heading the initiative. Some of the preliminary ideas include looking for ways to increase staff car-pooling, reducing the amount of electricity used for computers and building services, and cutting paper usage.

One part of the initiative has already been approved by Marie S. Bilik, executive director: NJSBA will institute a summertime four-day compressed work week for its staff. The total number of hours worked will remain unchanged, although employees will work extended hours Monday through Thursday, and the NJSBA headquarters office will be closed on Fridays. The summer schedule will begin Friday, July 11 and continue through Labor Day.

The action will allow staff to set the building’s air-conditioning at a much higher “maintenance” temperature for each three-day weekend, cutting energy usage and costs. The compressed work week will also cut gasoline costs and usage by commuting employees.

While the office will not be open on Fridays during the summer, any previously scheduled off-site meetings or programs involving NJSBA staff will take place.
