Lawmakers Near Budget Deal

Key legislators said this week they are close to a deal on a new state budget. According to news reports, the Legislature could act on a nearly $33 billion budget in the coming week, well before the June 30th end of the fiscal year.

Among the issues that have been debated in Gov. Jon Corzine’s budget proposal are cuts in aid for municipalities, hospitals, higher education and tax rebates. Other issues of debate are the governor’s proposed early retirement incentives to state workers, as well as reforms to the state pension system.

School aid is the largest single allocation of state funding. There is also a concern that legislators may add “footnote” language to the budget bill to address education issues that are not directly linked to appropriations.
