Lehigh Schedules Special Education Conference

Lehigh University will sponsor its 38th annual Education Law Conference from 8:30 a.m. to 3:50 p.m. Friday, May 14.  Lehigh University is in Bethlehem, Pa., across the New Jersey/Pennsylvania border.

The event is geared toward those in the education and health communities of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware, including superintendents, principals and special education directors, school psychologists and counselors, regular and special education teachers, social workers, attorneys, hearing officers, parents and school board members.

Michael Kaelber, NJSBA’s Director of Legal and Policy Services, will moderate a session on the extracurricular and co-curricular activities for special education students. The keynote presenter will be Dr. Perry Zirkel, a professor of education and law at Lehigh University who writes regular columns in publications such as Phi Delta Kappan and Principal magazines.

The program will features a simulated Individualized Education Plan (IEP) meeting entitled, “I Can’t Believe That Just Happened!” in which participants discuss whether members of the team acted correctly, and receive guidance for resolving the team’s dilemmas. The program also offers an update of special-education legal rulings over the past year, as well as sessions addressing English language learner and bilingual students; the use of seclusion and restraints; IEPs for gifted students; residential placements; transition services; responding to dangerous and disruptive students in general education settings; ethical responsibilities of the special education practitioner; special education and the juvenile justice system; higher education issues; wraparound services and paraprofessionals.
