Workshop Features Programs Not to be Missed

With the Workshop 2010 Preview Guide arriving in mailboxes, NJSBA members will find a host of new and exciting sessions in store for them at this year’s event.

Workshop, the premiere training conference for New Jersey school officials, will be held Oct. 19 and 20 in Somerset. Highlights include:

Science Leadership Academy: School 2.0 Workshop will open on Tuesday, Oct. 19 with an exciting program from the Science Leadership Academy (SLA) of Philadelphia and Apple. Attendees will learn how SLA is thinking outside the box, and how Apple is involved. Chris Lehmann, principal of SLA, and Brent D. Frey, Apple’s Education Development Manager, will be joined by students and teachers from the school for this unique session.

A Conversation with the Commissioner New Jersey Education Commissioner Bret Schundler will speak at the Exposition Hall at 4 p.m. Oct. 19 on the current issues facing education statewide. Be sure to get there early, as seating is limited to 1,000.

School Safety At 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 20, school safety takes center stage as the New Jersey Department of Education and the New Jersey State Police give a joint presentation on school security and drill laws. School officials will want to learn about new regulations that every New Jersey school district must adhere to.

Social Media If your district is wondering how to engage the community using social media such as Facebook and Twitter, Workshop is providing an informative program called, “Social Media: It’s Not as Scary as you Think.”  Participants will meet two notable speakers: Jim Long of the NBC News Washington Bureau, who travels with President Obama and shares his insights with 40,000 Twitter followers, and Eric Scheinger, the principal of New Milford High School, who connects with his community on both Facebook and Twitter.  The program will be held at 3:30 p.m. Oct. 20.
