For the first time, the School Ethics Commission has determined that a board member's postings on Facebook violated the School Ethics Act. The commission cautioned all board members to be mindful of their ethical responsibilities, even when using social media. |

Urban Hope Act on Legislative Agenda
The Urban Hope Act, which would allow non-profit education providers to operate up to four schools each in Newark, Jersey City and Camden, will be considered by two legislative committees this week. |

NJ Receives $38 million in Federal Grants
New Jersey will receive $38 million in a third round of federal Race to the Top grants. Half of the funding will be used by New Jersey to support the state’s education reform agenda. The other half will go to local districts; any district will be eligible to apply for a share of the funding. |

The most recent 30-Second Survey asked if readers favored allowing homeschool students to participate in interscholastic sports. Opinion was divided: Nearly half favored such a policy, 42 percent opposed it, and 11 percent were undecided. |

Congressman Andrews to Visit County Program
Congressman Rob Andrews and staff of the First Congressional District will visit a joint meeting of the Camden and Gloucester County School Boards Associations on Jan. 10. County association meetings are open to all school board members, even those from outside of the county. |

Training Focuses on Salary Guides
To equip school board members and administrators with the skills needed to address salary guide concerns, NJSBA will conduct a training program on Feb. 11 in Monroe Township. |

NJSBA Partners for Student Leadership Conferences
NJSBA is co-sponsoring a program that features a structured curriculum and skill-building conferences for high school students. One program will be Jan. 12 in south Jersey (registration is needed by Jan. 6), and the other will be Jan. 20 in north Jersey (registration is needed by Jan. 13). |

Hispanic Caucus Sponsors Scholarship
The National Hispanic Caucus of School Board Members is sponsoring a scholarship program for 2012 public high school graduates. The application deadline is Feb. 10. |
