‘Put Children First!’ Petition Drive

If state aid to education is frozen for two consecutive years, or drastically reduced from the level required by state statute, New Jersey’s school children and property taxpayers will suffer the consequences. Still, the current administration is sending signals that school districts should expect more bad news when Governor James E. McGreevey gives his budget address to the Legislature on February 4. NJSBA Dues Committee Created
NJSBA’s president, Glenn B. Ewan, has appointed an ad hoc Dues Reassessment Committee, whose charge is to: “Review the current NJSBA dues structure and make recommendations deemed necessary to equitably distribute dues among boards of education, making sure to maintain the ability of the Association to provide current and future services.” Get the full story.
No Child Left Behind—NJSBA’s No Child Left Behind Web site has been updated to add links to important new policy documents from the U.S. Department of Education. Among the new additions are five draft non-regulatory guidance documents: Improving Teacher Quality State Grants, Public School Choice, Supplemental Education Services, Title I Paraprofessionals, and Unsafe School Choice Options. It’s Time to Start

Workshop Proposals
With Workshop just around the corner, it’s time for school boards and their administrative teams to develop group sessions and/or action labs for presentation in Atlantic City on October 22-24, and to encourage staff to do the same. Get the full story.
January 23 Legislative Action

Radon Tests The Assembly passed A-1375 (Corodemus), which requires the posting of the results of radon testing in a public school. The bill now goes to the Senate Education Committee for consideration. (NJSBA supported.) Get the full story.

Resolutions Cutoff
All resolutions submitted for the May 17 Delegate Assembly meeting must be received at NJSBA’s Trenton office by 5 p.m. on March 3. The second notice regarding the cutoff date was e-mailed and faxed to school business administrators and county association presidents on January 23. Also included in the mailing were the rules for appearing before the Resolutions Subcommittee, which will meet on March 29 to consider the resolutions submitted for the May Delegate Assembly agenda.
