Court Issues Decisions on Confidentiality, Drug Testing and Vouchers

The United States Supreme Court recently issued the following three important opinions concerning public education:

Confidentiality of Student Information In Gonzaga University vs. Doe, the Court held that a student did not have a private right of action under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 when an educational institution allegedly released confidential student information without the consent of the student or parent. The student sought monetary damages for the FERPA violation from the university. The student claimed the university disclosed information without his consent, leading to the student being unable to receive necessary certifications to become a teacher in Washington State. Education Department Schedules Public Sessions on Learning Centers
The New Jersey Department of Education has scheduled four information sessions in August to brief the public on a federal program that will now be administered by the state. As the result of the federal No Child Left Behind Act, the state is taking over administration of the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program. Get the full story.
NJ Education Department Honors Star Schools and Classroom Programs
Ten model schools of excellence and 50 outstanding classroom practices were recently honored at the ninth annual Best Practices/Star Schools Program Awards ceremony in Freehold. The program is administered by the Office of Innovative Programs and Schools, Division of Educational Programs and Assessment at the New Jersey Department of Education. Get the full story.

A 12-student team from Governor Livingston High School in Berkeley Heights was among the four winning teams in a recent national competition that required use of the Internet to solve real world issues. Get the full story.
