Department of Education Launches 12th Grade Pilot Program
Commissioner of Education William L. Librera officially launched the 12th Grade Option Pilot Program on May 27. It is an initiative that allows students in their senior year of high school the flexibility to further enhance their education after completing the high school graduation requirements and passing the High School Proficiency Assessment. NJSBA Compiles School Election Rulings
NJSBA is currently resurveying its membership in an effort to update its database of school election decisions for the 2002 and 2003 election years. The Association has been compiling this information since 2001 via annual surveys to chief school administrators, school business officials, and school board attorneys. Get the full story.
Resolutions Cutoff for Delegate Assembly
The next NJSBA Delegate Assembly to consider resolutions will be held on November 22. The cutoff date for submission of resolutions to this Delegate Assembly is September 9. Resolutions to be considered for the agenda must be received in the Association office by the close of business on that date. Get the full story.

(S. Kean, Wolfe)—Prohibits requiring school and county college employees to search for or handle explosive devices. NJSBA did not take a position on the bill but expressed concerns that any excess security costs incurred by a school district be paid for by the state. Department Releases Character Education Report
The Department of Education last week released the first New Jersey Character Education Commission Report. Over the last year, the Commission collected information on best practices and other efforts in character education from five different public hearings throughout the state. They then submitted their recommendations to Governor McGreevey in this report. Get the full story.
Commissioner’s Equivalency or Waivers Bill Released
A bill that would require the state commissioner of education to grant an equivalency or waiver under certain conditions was unanimously voted out of the Assembly Education Committee on June 5. Get the full story.
The Association for Children of New Jersey and the Public Education Institute will be holding a forum on June 23 on School Readiness: The Building Blocks to a Child’s Success. The forum will focus on the elements that influence a child’s readiness for school, including preschool, child-care, and health and safety issues. Get the full story.
Special Election July 19
A special meeting of the NJSBA Delegate Assembly will be held on July 19 to conduct an election for the unexpired term of vice president of county activities. The meeting will be held at the Ramada Inn/National Conference Center in East Windsor from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

NJSBA Executive Committee Meeting
In accordance with the Open Public Meetings Act, notice is hereby provided of the planning meeting of the NJSBA Executive Committee. The meeting will be held at the Doral Forrestal, Route 1 North, Princeton, New Jersey on Friday, June 20, at 5:45 p.m. The meeting is open to the public.
    The agenda, to the extent known at this time, will include discussion and/or action on the minutes of the May 6, 2003 meeting; ratification of officers’ vouchers and telephone expenses; approval of vouchers past 60 days; completion of conflict of interest statements; Executive Committee meeting dates for 2003-04; review of Association initiatives and activities for 2003-04; Delegate Assembly debriefing; pending actions for Executive Committee consideration; procedure for orientation of the new Vice President for County Activities; updates on the November reports to the Delegate Assembly; ad hoc Dues Reassessment Committee and School Finance Committee reports; Bylaws adoption at the Delegate Assembly; and reports of the Executive Director, AED/Membership Development, and General Counsel (AED); update on Workshop-related expenses; ACES update; and discussion of plans for 2003 Northeast Region meeting.
    In addition, the Executive Committee may enter into closed session to discuss personnel matters.
