CLARIFICATION
|
At the May 18, 2002
Delegate Assembly, a question was raised by a delegate. The
following clarifies the response:
Resolution
number one from the Montclair Board of Education (Essex County)
proposed the following additional policy language for inclusion in
File Code 5117 of the
NJSBA Manual of Positions and Policies on Education: “NJSBA
believes that school districts that elect to offer intradistrict or
interdistrict school choice programs should suffer no loss in
governmental educational aid as a result of their decision to offer
choice programs.” The resolution passed and was adopted by the
delegates.
During the discussion, a delegate asked a question concerning
the multi-year equity plan that all districts must file with the
New Jersey
Department of Education. Specifically, she asked whether all
districts are required to balance schools according to socioeconomic
status. The “No” response was correct in that not all districts must
balance a school by socioeconomic status. Socioeconomic status is
but one of several factors under which a district might voluntarily
or mandatorily balance a school.
For further information on how this issue may affect your
district, you may wish to consult with your chief school
administrator. |
