Appellate Division Affirms PERC Ruling
|
|
In a recent decision, the Appellate Division of Superior Court affirmed an earlier decision of the Public Employment Relations Commission (PERC), concluding that arbitration was appropriate to determine whether a special education teacher was entitled to additional compensation for teaching two students added to her special education resource center class. PERCs denial of arbitration on the issue of class size was also upheld by the Appellate Division. In deciding both issues, the Appellate Division deferred to PERCs expertise. NJSBA participated in the matter as amicus curiae, filing a brief in support of the boards position. Get the full story.

June 17-21 Legislative Action
Budget Caps NJSBA strongly opposed A99 (Roberts) and S1701 (Lesniak, Bryant), legislation that revises the calculation of budget caps and reduces the allowable surplus for public school districts. This legislation takes power away from local school districts and could put them in financial jeopardy. Despite incredible pressure by school board members and citizens, both bills were reported out of committee on June 17 with amendments that made them worse for school boards. Get the full story.

NJSBA Leadership Conference
|
|
Do you remember why you sought a board seat? It was to ensure that the students in your district received a quality education and that they were prepared to move onto the next level of education or enter the world of work.
You cannot do this alone. When boards and superintendents work together as a team, great things can be accomplished. That is why the New Jersey School Boards Association has developed the Leadership Conference, with its focus on building the board-superintendent team to improve student achievement. Over one weekend, July 9-11, you will develop skills that would normally take years to hone.
Whether you are a newly elected president, a vice president who is looking ahead to next year, or a new or seasoned board member who aspires to a leadership position in the future, this conference is for you. Not only will you increase the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to carry out the presidents role, you will also leave this conference with the tools needed to develop a leadership team that is focused on student achievement.
Almost all of the sessions are small group, skill-building sessions; however, the conference begins with a veteran president and a superintendent explaining what it took to develop a winning team in their district. The conference closes with Marian Leibowitz, who will show participants how to use data to help the team make decisions that result in greater student achievement.
To register, call 1-888-886-5722, extension 5232. The conference will be held at the Doral Forrestal in Princeton.
