Senate Committee to Consider Bill That Would Incite Labor Strife
On June 9, the Senate Labor Committee will act on a bill being pushed by the New Jersey Education Association that would give unions the upper hand in contract negotiations.

Basic Boardsmanship
No one ever said being a board member would be easy. In fact, if you were to ask many in the education arena, they would tell you that being a board member is one of the most challenging but important jobs in America. With the new laws and mandates, the responsibilities of board members have increased significantly. Being a board member requires hard work and an understanding of the policies and procedures involved.
To help you to effectively carry out your responsibilities, NJSBA publishes Basic Boardsmanship, which provides a general overview of the duties and responsibilities of the school board member. Topics include derivation of authority, the School Ethics Act, holding effective board meetings, parliamentary procedure, the Sunshine Law, communicating with the public, the board’s relationship with the superintendent and district staff, curriculum oversight, student rights, the budget development process, and labor relations.
