Under the Playground Safety Subcode for New Jersey, all governmental, nonprofit and for-profit private entities must upgrade and improve all playground surfaces by October 18, 2004. These requirements apply to school districts. The upcoming compliance deadlines are as follows:
Newly constructed playgrounds, and all new and replacement equipment installed by April 18, 2000, were to conform to the requirements of the playground subcode.
Playground upgrades and new installations must comply with the 1997 edition of the Handbook for Public Playground Safety, which is produced by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission.
