Survey Reveals Opinions of NJ Residents on Public Involvement in Education

A coalition of more than 120 New Jersey-based education organizations, including NJSBA, released the results of a survey titled, Building Strong Bridges-A Report on Public Engagement in New Jersey Education. The research report, commissioned by New Jersey United for Higher School Standards, sheds new light on the issue of involvement in education from the perspective of the parent, teacher and non-parent. East Orange Board Sets Achievement Goals
Following a weekend-long retreat in February, the East Orange Board of Education, along with newly appointed superintendent Laval Wilson, set several goals to improve student achievement within their district. Some of the goals the district plans to focus on are programs for increased parent involvement, and staff training in specialty areas, such as computer technology, television production and culinary arts. New Name for New Tests
Commissioner of Education William L. Librera announced last week that New Jersey’s new state tests for third and fourth graders will be named the New Jersey Assessment of Skills and Knowledge, or NJ ASK3 and NJ ASK4. The tests are scheduled to be administered on May 20-23, with makeup testing on May 27-30. Get the full story.

NJSBA Position Available

NJSBA is currently seeking a qualified candidate for assistant director in its Policy & Library Resources Department, to manage its library/information center and archives. Duties include selecting resource materials; classifying, cataloging and maintaining current inventory of print/media materials; maintaining archival document retrieval system; researching Internet/library resources; and researching and preparing analyses and recommendations regarding legislation.

A bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience is required. Three year’s experience in public education or related field, and experience as a research librarian is preferred. Must be able to communicate effectively in written and oral form; handle multiple priorities; have knowledge of public education and school board governance, and deliver effective presentations. Must be able to work nights and weekends as required. The minimum salary is $41,676.
